New Week
Week 1: 9
Tuesday, 1/17
Got up at 4:00 a.m. to get to UCLA and get a locker, FUCLA. Went for a loop+ around campus at a harder pace to get warm quickly. Lifted for ~30 minutes.
Monday, 1/16
MLK day, stayed home and did some work around the aparatment. Went out for a painful 4 miles run and stopped by the market before walking the last mile home.

N+1
Sunday 1/8/2012 4.4 miles
Trying to start over again. Nothing really new this time. I'm out of shape, fat, and somewhat lazy, weak as shit. Gonna just try and run regularly and go to the gym a few times/week. Good fucking luck.
Today: Ran 4 miles, lifted for about 40 minutes.

Accountability: Week of 9/12/2011 - 9/18
Weekly Total: 35.1
9/18
Miles: 2.5
Spent all day writing O-chem problems for a dental school admissions test prep. Went out for a short jog in the evening. Surprised that my legs aren't hurting more after running all week (pathetic as it may sound)
9/7
Miles: 8
Slept in and rolled out of bed at 8:30 to go for my morning run. I've been planning all week on tracking out a course for Kennith Hahn state park. After finding an easy route, I completely failed in getting there. Not because I didn't get to the point I had marked on the map. But because there wasn't a park entrance there. Empty handed , with no breath taking view of the city I turned around and ran home. Damn you google maps, next time I'll turn on the satellite picture
9/16
Miles: 5.6
How do all of my runs end up around the same distance? Got up and took frenchy (Jonas) for a run. Felt ok, just didn't want to get up. Ran to Baldwin Hill sans going to the top.
9/15
Miles:5.5
Not enough sleep again, but maybe its because I'm just getting used to this schedule (I did still sleep 7.5 hours or so which isn't all that bad). Ran down memory lane to Veteran park. No laps this morning. Getting there and back was enough for today. Keep telling myself that if I can get through two weeks it will all come easier. That's how long I used to think it took.
9/14
Miles: 2.9
Felt lethargic. Slept ok, but could have used another hour. Ran Lazy Loop and stopped to stretch for about 5 minutes.
9/13
Miles: 5.6
Rolled out of bed at 6:30 after a night of less than optimal sleep and ran the now longer version of the Cheviot Hills Loop. Felt good considering that I'm fat and out of shape.
9/12
Miles: 5
Woke up after 12 hours of much needed sleep and hit the road. As a first step towards my goals I feel I need to explore the neighborhood around me more. Make more routes. Eventually make longer routes. Today ran a newly modified route which I'll christen Little Burton. Hopefully to be followed shortly with Big Burton. It was a shorter (feels like medium now) 5 mile loop running through some back streets up to Burton Way where there is a nice wide grassy median to run along (reminiscent of Huntington). Felt good.

New Beginning
We don't really keep in contact much anymore so I'm not sure if anyone will ever read this. That's ok though. These words, along with my newest endeavor are more for my own catharsis and pleasure than anything else.
Finishing up a conference this past weekend on Catalina island I had an epiphany that i've experience maybe 5 times now since the onset of graduate school: I really missed running. After two days and nights of continuous binging on science, alcohol, kayaking and the such, I awoke on Sunday morning with a slight hangover as everything from the weekend had finally taken its toll on me. The three and a half hours I'd devoted to sleep the previous night weren't enough to redeem all my intoxication from the previous night. Shortly after breakfast at 7:30 I decided it was time to do something alone and for myself. Looking to the west, I saw a tall Hill that looms over the Wrigley Institute where the conference had been held: My goal was to ascend to the top. It was nothing difficult, just something I wanted to do alone in order to get a good view of my surroundings and afford some time for personal reflection.
I had been mildly stressed from my presentation the previous night when I had been unable to provide what were in my opinion satisfactory answers or responses to the only two questions asked (both of which regarded a cyclic voltammogram and the conclusions I had drawn from them). The ascent was steep with no well-defined path, however, within an hour I'd careened to the top . I continued to walk along a road that I found up there until I turned around and decided to walk the few miles back to two harbors and ultimately back to the institute (returning on the same path seemed as though it may have been overly treacherous as the beaten grass on the hill side was slick and slippery).
I thought about a lot. Primarily how I can improve my science and my career and how I feel disappointed in myself for wasting a lot of my intelligence. And later I moved onto thinking about how there is no satisfaction in the things I produce. That is not say that I don't enjoy the things I do with my wife or friends, but that running, and my scientific research provide me no positive feedback. Fortunately it doesn't take me long to conclude that I am ultimately the only one responsible for what I do in life. So the logical action is to change. Further if I want change, I must make it happen. I cannot wait around for others to tell me to change or expect it to happen without some instigating action. I will refrain from telling you how I intend to improve my research and my efforts there and focus the remainder on my thoughts of running.
I miss running. I miss the team. I miss the competition we used to have, the practices and everything else that went along with it. I feel that there were several times in my life when people have told me that the activity I was participating in at that moment in time would leave me with a bond to those people that I would recognize, remember, and honor the rest of my life: boy scouts, wrestling, high school, college. But in comparison to my memories from running at caltech for four years, those nearly fall out of sight and mind. Remembering how Mark and I would consume 5+ tommy's burgers (because it was sportsman-like before racing back to campus). Every time we got up at 5:30 (in the A.M.) to take the van to Chino for a race. Running loops in the arroyo. Running beer miles. Lifting weights. Stretching. All the camaraderie has really built up on me and when I think about it is something I will never have back.
I probably can never get it back.
I want to run again. This is something I've said many times over the past three years. I've meant it every time and had varying degrees of success. I suppose that at this point I must begin by determining what I expect to get out of running and how best to achieve my goals. Primarily, I want fitness. Married life has began to take a toll on my body which only gets a few miles of commute biking as exercise daily. Secondly, I want a challenge. I want to do something where I can measure my improvement and feel as though I'm working towards something. These are the two and only two things I expect to be able to aim for and achieve in running. This is slightly off target from my yearning for the experiences of collegiate running. Fitness will come naturally if i maintain a reasonable honest effort of progress towards my goal. Where I have failed in the past is being able to maintain the necessary effort for more than a few (or at best several) months. Last time I went through this biannual ritual of recommitment I decided early on that the reason for ultimate failure in the past was due to a lack of purpose and that I needed to focus my training towards some goal. I needed to run a race. Sadly, this never happened. I never signed up for any and within a little more than a month I was off the wagon again.
This time I will not make the same mistake as last time. I will sign up for a race. I will continually sign up for races. I will improve and measure my success in foot steps, seconds, and endorphins (that is still one of my favorite shirts). Most importantly, I will enjoy.

Week of 5/10/10 - 5/16/10
Total Miles: 20.8
5/10/10
Went to bed ridiculously early last night (before 10) and got up at 7ish. Ran up to Cheviot Hills park at an easier start-out kind of pace, did two loops at a moderate pace and came back. Felt really good considering yesterday was my longest run in months. 6.7
5/11/10
Woke up a few before 7 and decided that the extra hour of sleep i'd set aside was useless at this point. Went out for 6ish up rose, to sepulveda, to national, by the SM airport and down centinela to ballona creek and back. Felt good and definitely was going faster throughout the run. My right foot hurt a little (blisters from the sunday run) but was feeling better than last night.
5/12/10
5.3 in the a.m. Didn't feel particularly sore or tired, just lethargic. Took things easy and stopped to stretch.

Time to start blogging again
5/9/2010
Its been about 139-ish days now in a row (but who's counting) and I think its time to start keeping a better record of my running. Not just that, but i've also specifically avoided it out of a semi-substantiated superstition that whenever i start running i can keep it going continuously as long as I'm not blogging.
But enough of that, its time to take it seriously and try to get in reasonable shape now that i've established the determination to run every day despite my current mental or physical condition.
So for my first entry In nearly (or over a year):
12.5 miles with Ian, Chaves, and Robby from Monterrey/Arroyo to Devil's Gate and back. Ideally wouldn't have run in the 3.0s, but paid the weak price of 3 blisters which is considerably cheaper than the last time I made this mistake and could barely walk for a few days.

9/14 - 9/20
Monday - felt like shit.. jogged a few laps at the park
Tuesday - still felt like shit... jogged less
Wednesday - Been beat up more psychologically than mentally, i think. Convinced myself to run 5-6ish
Thursday - Ran about 4 miles.. I don't know what this funk I've been in is. I feel like I really need to stretch more too, maybe that will help.

Rejuvenated (no lies)
Been running again for about a month... feels good.... went for my first long run yesterday of 12.5 miles. Felt it today, but was still able to move at an ok pace for 5 miles. I finially think i might stand a chance of getting in some type of decent shape as I've psyched into running everyday. Thats my only rule. I've tried doing this before and failed poorly. Anyways, its been working for 36 days now and it keeps me running every day and getting in shape. In addition to this I try to not think to much about mileage or about times/pace. Just go relatively and keep loose track of how things are going.
La Di Da
In other news today I was quite pleased when two teenage motorists gave me props while riding home today. Probably two of the few very positive vibes I've gotten while riding/commuting out here.
Wednesday, 9/9
Ran some... felt like shit... only ran about 2.5 miles
Thursday, 9/10
Went out for a 5-6er and felt good so went for about 10 at a moderate pace
Friday, 9/11
easy 6
Saturday, 9/12
didn't have much time, super easy 3
Sunday, 9/13
Hard 6, felt surprisingly good. just surprising since i don't think i've felt this comfortable going fast/hard in a while

Update: 7/13/2009
After having moved into my new apartment I've finally began to attempt running with a semi-regular schedule. I'm failing at that, but at any rate I'm succeeding in running a few days a week and feeling healthier. I suppose that the only real thing worth noting is that up until last thurday I was feeling somewhat tight and inhibited from going fast, despite running consistently, starting easy on each run, and stretching. Finally last thursday I just forced it out and it seemed to be feeilng easier by the end of the run. Today did a honest moderate 6 mile run, felt like I was maintaining a 6:40-ish pace, didn't feel too tired after.
Will update more later...

Week of 4/27-5/3
Total Minutes: 295
5/3
P.M.: Not feeling too tired but decided to take it easy.. also had a small lack of time :/ ... Did about 30 minutes around the park in my newly found brooks, good trainers at long last :).
5/2
P.M.: Took an easy jog around campus (45). Then like yesterday hit the abs at the gym. Tired myself out doing crunches and the like.
5/1
P.M.: Wait till about 8 p.m. and headed out for about 7 laps around the park. Felt ok. The blister I earned from running in my 5.0s yesterday subsided despite that I was yet again running in the old 5.0s. Hit up the gym afterward for a quick ab workout.
4/30
A.M.: Ran down sunset and back for about 60 minutes. My right big toe is kinda hurting since I did it in my 5.0s since I don't know where my Brooks are. If Mark would check the track closet for me... cough cough... ....
Late A.M.: Hit the gym with Derrick for a while
4/29
P.M.: Park goodness again. Still mean to go to the gym later. Maybe it will happen today.
Later: Went to the gym. Ran for 20 minutes first increasingly the pace steadily. Then hit the weights for about 50 minutes focusing on abs, arms and chest.
4/27
P.M.: Park goodness for a while, then home. Need to hope that mark finds my brooks at the gym. I can't keep running in 5.0s everyday, or can I?? I want to go to the gym later we'll see if that happens

Week of 4/6 - 4/12
Run
140 minutes
4/7
p.m.: Ran through the bel-air hills then around UCLA. Took the run pretty easy since I haven't had an easy/off day since friday. Felt ok. My toe ache seems to have subsided.
4/6
a.m.: Jogged an easy 20 minutes up Veteran, then on sunset for a bit and back. I can definitely feel my fitness returning as I had a rather long weekend (170 minutes) for this early in training and am not really sore.
p.m.: Ran down to Ohio then on Santa Monica, out and back for 60 minutes. Felt a little tight, but it came rather easy until the last 5 or 10 minutes. But overall I can feel my fitness coming back.

Week of 3/30 - 4/5
375 minutes
8 runs
4/5:
a.m. Ran Brown mountain with Ian and came back on the miller campground trail. I think its called palomino. The uphill hurt a bit, and I had an impending urge to shit towards the end. 70 minutes
4/4:
Went to Pomona to watch the annual track meet and such. Took a break between the 1500m and the 800's to go jog around for 100 minutes. Felt good. Toe hurt a little, but not nearly as bad as on thursday night.
4/3
Toe hurt, took today off.
4/2
noonish: kinda angry at ucla housing. Did a quick 35 minute run
4/1
a.m. Easy 20 minute jog. Didn't feel t0o tight.
p.m. Didn't have much time to run, but I still squeezed in a 30 minute run at medium to hard effort around campus. Off to midori's to binge on sushi.
3/31
p.m. 60 minute hill run through bel-air and around UCLA. Went easy for the first half and worked the last 1 1/2 miles or so a little.
3/30
a.m. 20 minute shake out jog. Really cleared some junk out of the legs.
p.m. 50 minute slightly harder (but nothing crazy) run. Ran some back roads in santa monica out and back. Felt a little tight at times and later in the evening.

3.29.2009
Weekly Summary: 6/29
4 runs
170 minutes
Ran a few days this week and started out easy on monday with just a short run maybe 30 minutes. Came back and ran friday, saturday, and sunday. Decided that if I want to get back in shape I need some motivation other than track. I finally have it: 1) I'm getting fat 2) I'm gonna train for a marathon (k-way said he'd join me)
I know it might sound crazy for me to do a marathon, but i really think i need something different. Mark was probably on the right track by suggesting I do 5k or 10k. But I think I need to go even more extreme. Just the though of being on the track right now makes me work to hard to early then I wear out quickly. But the possiblity of eventually (late fall to winerish) of doing a marathon makes me comfortable with just taking a nice easy hour run. We'll see how this develops over the next few weeks. I'm gonna just be running time for now, trying to run new courses that I don't even know so that I'm not tempted to time myself. Additionally, I'm gonna try to do morning jogs a few days a week to keep things fresh.
Monday, Jan 26 5 miles
Went on a quick 5 during a 2 hour break. Saw a guy who was weaving back and forth running towards me. As I got closer I realized he was picking up trash as he ran. Not a bad idea I thought. Ran hard for the last mile or two.

Tuesday, Jan 20, 5 Miles
Took a few days off as I had a lot of studying to do and had been feeling rather sick. Finally got around to running 5 miles today in a new pair of shoes I got. Need to keep it up though :/
